How to Measure Cigar Size and Choose the Right Case

Picking the right cigar case starts with two simple numbers: length and diameter (expressed as ring gauge). This practical guide shows you how to measure accurately, how to convert between diameter and ring gauge, gives a printable sizing chart you can use right away, and shows which JIMUTO case fits which cigars. Use this as a reference in-store, at shows, or as a lead magnet to capture email signups.

Quick checklist (what you’ll need)

  • A small ruler (inches) or a digital caliper (best).
  • A pen to note measurements.
  • The printable sizing chart below.
  • Your cigars at room temperature (not freshly out of a humidor).

Step 1 — Measure cigar length

  1. Lay the cigar flat on a table.
  2. Measure from the cap (closed end) to the foot (open end) in inches.
  3. Record length to the nearest 1/8" (0.125") or 0.1".
    • Example: a Robusto commonly measures 5.0" or 5.0"×50 (length × ring gauge).

Step 2 — Measure cigar diameter and convert to ring gauge

Option A — Using a caliper (recommended): measure the diameter in inches (e.g., 0.78").
Option B — Using a ruler: measure diameter across the widest point, then convert.

Conversion formulae (simple):

  • ring gauge = diameter (inches) × 64
  • diameter (inches) = ring gauge ÷ 64

Examples:

  • Diameter 0.78" → 0.78 × 64 = 49.92 → about 50 ring gauge.
  • Ring gauge 60 → 60 ÷ 64 = 0.9375" diameter ≈ 0.94".

Step 3 — Allow fit tolerance (don’t make slots too tight)

To avoid crushing or difficult insertion, give each slot a small clearance. Recommended internal slot diameter = cigar diameter + 0.12" (≈3 mm). That cushion prevents pressure marks and makes daily use easy.

Example:

  • 50 RG → diameter ≈ 0.781" → slot internal diameter ≈ 0.901" (0.781 + 0.12).

How to use the chart to pick a JIMUTO case

  1. Measure your cigar length and ring gauge.
  2. Find the row with the nearest ring gauge/diameter.
  3. Check the recommended slot diameter — if your cigar diameter ≤ recommended slot diameter, the case will fit comfortably.
  4. Choose TCC-TS for pocketable 1–2 cigar travel, TCC-CE for everyday 3-cigar balance, or TCC-CG for larger gauges/4+ capacity and presentation.

FAQs

Q: What if my cigar is right at the edge of the slot size?
A: Choose the next larger capacity or case (e.g., 3-slot or 4-finger) to avoid pressure marks.

Q: Do leather cases stretch?
A: Leather can relax slightly over time, but don’t rely on stretching — choose correct fit from day one.

Q: Can I use this chart for cutters or humidors?
A: The ring gauge/diameter conversions are universally useful, but cutter and humidor fit depends on different internal geometries.
